Plain White or Color Changing? A Buyer’s Take on Dual Zone Bulkhead Lights
Two fixtures. Same PP shell, same round and ellipse bodies, same wall or ceiling install. Completely different reasons to put either one on a purchase order.
Every quarter a batch of bulkhead light samples lands on my desk that all look roughly the same in a catalog photo. Round, white, plastic, “moisture proof,” done. What actually separates a good order from a wrong one usually shows up only after you plug the thing in and see what the two light zones are actually for. I have been testing two versions from the same platform lately, and they solve different problems well enough that I stopped treating them as interchangeable line items.
The Short Version
If the fixture needs to disappear into a ceiling schedule and just work, spec the Dual Beam version. If the fixture is doing double duty as a design feature in a lobby, bar, or event space, the Crystal RGB version earns its higher price.

Reading the Spec Sheet Like a Buyer, Not a Catalog
Both fixtures share more than they differ on paper. Same 1600LM output, same PP construction, same round and ellipse footprint, same black or white frame choice. The difference that actually matters sits in two places a spec sheet buries: what the second circuit is for, and what the lens does to the light.

Where Each One Actually Gets Specified
The Dual Beam version is the one I put on a schedule when the brief says “just needs to be reliable and pass inspection.” It shows up in stairwells, back of house corridors, carports, and utility ceilings where nobody is meant to comment on the light fixture at all. The two circuits are still useful there, mainly for a full brightness day setting and a dimmer ring only night setting, without needing a separate emergency or accent fixture.
The Crystal RGB version earns its keep in spaces where the lighting schedule includes a line for “mood” or “brand moment.” A hotel lobby wall, a restaurant bar backsplash, a retail entrance, an event space that changes color for different bookings. The sparkle from the faceted lens reads as a deliberate design choice rather than a cost saving compromise, which matters when a client is comparing your proposal against a decorative fixture from a lighting design house at three times the price.
What I Still Ask the Supplier Before Ordering
- IP moisture rating: Neither spec sheet listed an exact IP figure. Get it in writing before specifying either fixture for a genuinely wet or outdoor location, not just a damp one.
- RGB control method: Remote, wall panel, or app control changes the installation cost and the client conversation. Confirm before quoting labor.
- Certifications for the destination market: CB, CE, or SASO/SABER documentation should be confirmed per shipment, not assumed from a previous order.
- Circuit wiring on site: Whether the two zones can be switched independently depends on how the electrician wires the fixture into the local switching, not just the fixture itself.
